    Yesterday my daughter and I watched as her beloved goldfish swam his final lap around the circumference of our toilet bowl. As she watched him swirl towards his end, my daughter breathed a heavy sigh and lamented, “I’m going to miss Frederick. He was one of my best friends.” The mourning lasted about l0 minutes and then I heard her giggling happily over something her sister had said.

    In the last few weeks or months has anyone challenged you to define matter? My daughter is in a science class and as part of her nightly homework, I have the privilege of working with her on memorization in preparation for upcoming tests. On a recent science test, she had to define “matter.” It’s amazing to me how much I learn while studying with her. I am definitely not smarter than a fifth grader, but when it comes to learning I try to stay on the growth side of the bell curve.
